Lovey's Story

Meet Lovey!

Lovey is a sweet, food-loving young girl who is looking for a patient and understanding family to help her grow in confidence. While she has a gentle nature, Lovey can be quite worried in new environments and around unfamiliar people. Building trust takes time for her, and she will need a home that can allow her to move at her own pace and develop bonds without pressure.

Lovey would thrive in a calm, predictable household where her family understands that settling in may take time. Even once she is comfortable, she is likely to remain a sensitive girl who benefits from routine, consistency, and ongoing support. A home where someone is around more often than not would be ideal, particularly during the first few weeks as she adjusts to her new surroundings and learns that she is safe.

When settling Lovey into her new home, it is recommended that her family focuses on helping her feel comfortable in the home environment before introducing too many new experiences. Starting with quiet, calm walks after she has had time to decompress will help build her confidence without overwhelming her.

One of Lovey's favourite things in the world is food! She absolutely loves sniffing and enjoys enrichment activities that encourage her natural foraging behaviours. Feeding her meals through enrichment toys, puzzle feeders, snuffle mats, and other food-based activities will not only keep her mentally stimulated but will also help build her confidence. Lickimats topped with peanut butter are a particular favourite and are a wonderful way to help her relax and enjoy positive experiences.

As a young dog, Lovey is still learning her basic manners and life skills. She will benefit from a supportive family that can provide structure, clear boundaries, and positive reinforcement training. Regular training sessions will help her develop impulse control, build confidence, and strengthen her bond with her new family.

Lovey would be best suited to a home with older children or teenagers who can understand and respect her sensitive nature. Any children in the home will need to meet her prior to adoption and be able to recognise and respond appropriately to basic dog body language.

Lovey has shown positive social behaviour with other dogs and must meet any resident dogs before adoption. During her time in care, she successfully met another nervous dog and was able to relax in his company, happily standing near him and walking back to the kennels together. With appropriate introductions, she may enjoy having a calm and understanding canine companion.

With patience, kindness, and plenty of positive encouragement, Lovey will blossom into a loyal and loving companion. She is a beautiful young girl who simply needs a family willing to give her the time, understanding, and support she deserves.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
