H5 Bird Flu (avian influenza) alert

H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza or commonly known as H5 Bird Flu is a viral disease that primarily affects birds. It can cause serious illness and death in wild birds and poultry and may also affect some other animals if they come into contact with sick birds.

RSPCA Queensland is closely monitoring the H5 Bird Flu situation and working with relevant government agencies and animal welfare partners.

Preparing for H5 Bird Flu starts long before the first patient arrives.

Right now RSPCA veterinarians, nurses and wildlife carers are undertaking specialised training, strengthening biosecurity measures, preparing isolation areas, reviewing emergency response plans and ensuring essential equipment is ready to use.

Preparing now could make all the difference to responding quickly and safely, while continuing to provide care for the more than 27,000 sick, injured and orphaned wildlife that come through the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital every year.

H5 Bird Flu can't be stopped from impacting Queensland. But preparations can make sure our teams are ready to respond safely.
