Opal's Story

Opal is a sweet and gentle older girl with a heart full of love just waiting to find a family to call her own. Affectionate, people-oriented and easygoing, she would make a wonderful companion and could be a great match for first-time dog owners. As she settles into her new surroundings, Opal may need a little time to adjust so a patient and understanding family who will let her gain confidence at her own pace would be ideal.

Opal would love to be welcomed indoors as a cherished member of the family while still having access to a secure outdoor area to enjoy. She is suitable for families with children of all ages, with younger children encouraged to attend a meet and greet to ensure everyone gets along wonderfully.

While Opal has not been tested with cats, she may be able to live alongside a feline friend with slow, positive and controlled introductions. She could also potentially share her home with a calm, social male dog of a smaller size.

A home with secure 5-foot fencing is recommended to help keep this lovely lady safe and secure. In return, Opal promises plenty of affection, loyal companionship and all the love that only a special senior girl can give.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
