About Us

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Queensland (RSPCA Qld) is the state’s leading animal welfare charity, dedicated to improving the lives of all domestic, farmed and native animals throughout Queensland. Formed in 1883 in Queensland, countless animals have turned to the RSPCA for help for over 140 years.

RSPCA Queensland is a non-government, community-based charity.

Caring for over 42,000 animals every year and 91% funded by donations, RSPCA Queensland relies heavily on the generosity of animal lovers to continue to provide lifesaving services to animals in need.

From one Inspector and several supporters in our fledgling years, RSPCA Queensland has grown to have over 415 staff across the state, generously supported by over 2,000 passionate volunteers. Every person who contributes to our cause helps to positively change the lives of animals, people and the community.

What we achieve together for animals is only possible thanks to passionate Queenslanders, just like you.

Timeline

2023 - A Mental Health First Aid Program for staff and the RSPCA Leadership Academy was launched.

The delivery of a “profit for purpose” strategy has been furthered with the opening of more new Op Shops.

We were involved in the review leading to the Animal Care and Protection Regulation 2023 which prescribed animal welfare Codes of Practice.

We further strengthened our financial position during the year and became debt-free for the first time in 20 years, ensuring our long term sustainability.

2022 - Planning commenced for a new Wildlife Hospital.

RSPCA Queensland participated in a review of the Animal Care and Protection Act, which resulted in strengthening its provisions.

2021 - As a progression from our existing focus of creating positive animal outcomes, RSPCA Qld implemented Socially Conscious Animal Sheltering as its guiding philosophy.

Despite the financial challenges of COVID-19, strong cost controls and a refocus of costs back to our core operations, together with “Job Keeper” resulted in a surplus for the year, thus enabling us to invest in our future sustainability.

Community Outreach Programs were developed and delivered to reduce animal welfare issues arising with the changing environment.

2020 - COVID-19 with lockdowns, Adoptions Centres and Op Shops closed and with our traditional fundraising curtailed meant that we had to transform our operations while maintaining essential services. Bushfires striking at the heart of Queensland’s wildlife habitat exacerbated our situation.

A state of the art new Animal Care Campus was opened at Toowoomba.

AWARE, a school based program was rolled out for teachers from Prep to Year Eight.

We partnered the Community Cat Program led by Australian Pet Welfare Foundation for the better management of cats in the community.

2019 - Our Wildlife Hospital has become the busiest in the Southern Hemisphere.

After major redevelopment, the Carins Animal Care Campus was reopened and improvements at the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre at Eumundi completed.

Finances continue to be challenging and we finished 2019 with the first loss we had since 2005.

2018 - A special task force was established using digital intelligence to uncover and prosecute dog and cockfighting.

Successful adoption initiatives were developed with “Pop Up Adoptions”, the “Big Adopt Out” and “Clear the Shelters” events.

2017 - Regulations under the Animal Care and Protection Act introduced a Code of Practice for Dog Breeding with the aim of reducing irresponsible breeding.

Significant improvements were made to shelters at Wacol, Gympie and Bundaberg funded by generous donations.

The “Junior Crew” children’s school holiday program was introduced at Wacol.

Inspectorate

Responding to over 13,000 animal welfare complaints

Our Inspectors respond to animal welfare complaints every day to help prevent animal cruelty. They rescue sick, neglected and abandoned animals so they can get a better life, but also provide pet care education and support to pet owners that love their animals but just need a helping hand.

Wildlife & Rescue

Ensuring our native animals have a future in the wild

Our wildlife need us. Every year over 27,000 sick or injured wildlife patients are treated at our Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre. With your support, we also operate an Animal Emergency Hotline 1300 ANIMAL and help save lives through our Animal Rescue teams. The urgent need for a new purpose-built Wildlife Hospital is growing, and your support can help bring this vital project to life to protect the future of our native wildlife.

Advocacy

Inspiring change through animal welfare improvements

We know that animal lovers in Queensland are concerned for the welfare of animals and want to see improvements made across a wide range of issues like ending battery cages, ending live export and ending puppy farms. We strive to educate and push for legislative change so animals can live better lives.
