Diggie's Story

Meet Diggie, a sweet, sensitive young boy who is looking for a calm, patient owner ready to guide him through the big wide world at his own pace. Having missed out on some important socialisation as a pup, Diggie can be quite unsure and worried by new things, places, and people, meaning he will need a little extra time to settle in and feel safe in his new home. He relies heavily on his handler for reassurance when startled, so providing a crate or "denning area" as a secure safe space is highly recommended while you work on building a strong, trusting bond.

Diggie needs a home with indoor access so he can be part of the family, though because he may not have spent much time inside before, allowing him to explore the indoors at his own pace from a comfortable outdoor starting point is ideal. He is best suited to a home with teenagers, though he may adapt to older, calm, and respectful children who understand his sensitive nature. Finally, Diggie must meet any potential canine siblings at the time of adoption; he would do wonderfully with a calm, social, and mature dog who can show him the ropes and boost his confidence, provided they are introduced through a slow, patient meet-and-greet.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
