Nova's Story

Hi, I'm Nova! I’m a sweet and affectionate girl who is looking for a person to call my own. I love exploring the world through my nose and will happily spend time sniffing and investigating everything around me before returning to my people for pats and affection. Sniffy walks are one of my favourite things, and I would love a home where I can be included as part of the family and spend plenty of time indoors with my humans.

I can be a little unsure with close handling and restraint, especially around my head, but my touch tolerance has been steadily improving in the shelter through gentle, positive interactions. My new family will need to continue building my confidence using treats, licky mats, and patience to make handling a positive experience. I can also get a little excited and silly when I'm happy, sometimes offering soft jump-ups for attention.

Nova has shown a little worry around some unfamiliar men and displayed mild fear reactivity on one occasion, but she recovered quickly with support from her handler. Ongoing positive experiences will be important to help her continue building confidence. She has shown some interest in soft toys and may become more playful once she has settled into her new home.

Nova may be suitable for a family with calm, respectful children who can understand when she needs a little space. Any children must meet her at the time of adoption. If there is another dog in the home, a meet-and-greet will also be required. She has been soft and social with calm male dogs and may enjoy a tolerant, social male companion, but can become a little tense around very over-the-top dogs. With patience, understanding, and lots of love, Nova will make a wonderful companion for someone looking for a sweet girl who just wants to be close to her people.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
