Nugget's Story

Nugget is a sweet and affectionate boy who is looking to be a part of a family. Nugget can be initially fearful when meeting new people or placed in new environments, he will need a calm, quiet home that can provide structure and routine. Nugget hasn't spent much time inside a house so he will need an owner who can work with him slowly using positive reinforcement so that he understands being under a roof isn't that scary.

Nugget would benefit from having someone home for the first couple of days/week to help settle him into his new environment and give him some time to bond to his new family.

He will require secure, solid 6ft fencing as he was able to jump/climb the kennels here in shelter the day he arrived. He may do best with being left alone indoors with long lasting chews and enrichment or may benefit from having a doggy friend in the home.

When he gets nervous Nugget likes to stick close to his handler when walking around shelter. He will require a calm, patient and understanding family who will take things at his pace.

Nugget may benefit from being provided a crate or denning area to go when he is feeling worried or overwhelmed.

He can be unsure of close handling and restraint. Adopters will need to go slow, work on building a bond with him and continue to practice touch consent. He would benefit from a fear free, positive reinforcement vet in the future. He has been unsure with the harness going over his head and being clipped up. Nugget is a food lover and we recommend feeding from enrichment to help keep his mind active and stimulated.

He is a smart boy, who knows how to sit and lie down. Nugget would enjoy having a family to continue his training!

Once Nugget is comfortable with his people he enjoys laying next to them and hanging out. He can be quite affectionate and is a big leaner!

Due to his fearful and nervous behaviours, we recommend older kids in the home who can understand canine body language. We strongly encourage all family members in the home meet at time of adoption.

Must meet other dogs in the home at time of adoption. Has been social and non reactive to dogs he has met in shelter. May benefit from having a friend in the home to show him that life doesn't have to be so scary.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
