Charlie's Story

Meet Charlie, a playful and affectionate young girl who is looking for a loving family to help her continue building her confidence. Charlie forms strong bonds with her people and thrives when included as part of the family, enjoying both indoor time and plenty of opportunities for fun and enrichment.

Charlie absolutely loves to play. Whether she's chasing a frisbee, zooming around with her favourite soft toys, or joining in a game of tug, she's always ready for some fun with her people. She is an active, intelligent girl who enjoys using her brain just as much as her body.

While Charlie is a sweet and loving companion, she can be a little unsure at times, particularly with close handling or restraint. She will do best with a family who can take things at her pace, focus on building a strong bond, and use positive reinforcement techniques. Treats, licky mats, and other enrichment activities can be especially helpful when handling is required.

In her previous home and while in care, Charlie has greatly enjoyed enrichment activities such as licky mats, snuffle mats, Kongs, and milk bottles. Continuing to provide her meals through enrichment toys and activities will help keep her mentally stimulated and prevent boredom.

Charlie would be best suited to a home without cats or other small animals due to a history of chasing possums and showing a strong interest in them. She would also benefit from living with older, calm, and respectful children who can understand when she needs a little space and reassurance.

If there is already a dog in the home, a meet and greet will be required prior to adoption. Charlie has shown that while she can coexist with other dogs, she tends to be submissive and may choose to avoid interaction rather than actively engage. She would be best matched with a calm, respectful dog companion who will not overwhelm her.

Charlie is a wonderful young girl with a playful spirit, a loving heart, and plenty of potential. With patience, understanding, and lots of enrichment and play, she will make a loyal and rewarding companion for the right family.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
