Mikey's Story

ADOPTION RECOMMENDATIONS:

Mikey is a playful young boy looking for an active family who have quality time to spend with him.

Mikey can be a little unsure at times, especially in new places and when meeting new people. He warms up quickly and is easily won over with some yummy treats.

Taking things slowly by allowing him time to settle into the home and bond with his people first before taking him out will set him up for success.

He is very smart and eager to please. Knows his sit and will thrive with continued training. In no time he will know all the tricks there is to learn.

Has a history of jumping 6ft fencing in previous home. Will need an owner home more often than not to be able to monitor outside. Must have secure, solid fencing- 6ft.

Showed some interest in toys and he will likely play more once settled.

Loves his enrichment, using both the licky mat and snuffle mats during his assessment. Highly recommend feeding his meals from enrichment to provide mental stimulation. Some other ideas include milk bottles, egg cartons, snuffle boxes, food puzzles, kongs and wobblers.

Recommend older children, can be unsure at times and then becomes silly and jumpy also. Must meet.

Meet other dogs at time of adoption. Met another male dog and was social and playful. Is quite social and lived with other male dog previously but can easily become vocal and reactive so would do best with a quick meet. Would benefit from going home with a calm and social doggie friend to help with his confidence and someone he can follow and learn from.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
