Bowie's Story

Bowie is a sweet sensitive young girl.

She will need an owner who has quality time to spend with her to build a strong bond, continue working on her confidence and provide the physical exercise and mental stimulation she requires.

Bowie can initially be quite unsure and fearful especially in new environments and when meeting new people.

It will likely take her a little longer to settle into her new home and bond with her family. Take things slowly allowing her to properly settle before introducing her to new people and places.

When new people come over have them crouch down and roll treats towards her, allowing her to control the interactions.

In shelter she is also startles easily with loud noises and fast movements. Recommend a calmer home environment that offers structure and routine.

Bowie can be avoidant of touch, especially with new people. Recommend working on touch consent/positive touch and building a strong bond with her.

Bowie will need a large yard/acreage to give her space to run and play, especially as she is so unsure and worried so walking to begin with will likely be too overwhelming for her

We recommend older calm respectful children. In her previous home she was living with a toddler and they mentioned that she did get excited at times and knock them over.

Highly recommend working on her recall as she can be a little hard to catch at times. Recommend using a long line lead to give her more freedom to explore but the security that she can not run away.

No cats or other small animals in the home as has chased cat in previous home.

Must meet other dogs at time of adoption. In shelter Bowie was quite unsure and worried by other dogs, preferring to avoid but when nose to nose did rush forward and air snap and then create distance again. Has lived with another small breed but was 'too much' for him. Other dog would need to be calm and respectful. may prefer to be single dog. No small breeds as has now lived with small breeds on 2 occasions, and it did not work out.

No dog parks beaches etc

Receive a 4kg bag of Royal Canin dry food

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
