Cricket's Story

Cricket is an affectionate but shy young boy looking for a calm, patient home where he can build confidence and enjoy quality time with his family. He must be allowed indoors and included as part of the family.

Cricket can be unsure in new situations and has likely missed out on some early socialisation, so he will need time to settle before being introduced to new people, places, and experiences. He loves enrichment activities, particularly sniffing and licking for his meals, and would benefit from feeding through enrichment items such as snuffle mats, Kongs, puzzle feeders, and food-dispensing toys.

As Cricket settles, he can become a little jumpy and will benefit from ongoing positive reinforcement training. He is still learning the basics and will need an owner willing to start from the beginning and reward calm, desirable behaviours. While he has shown little interest in toys in the shelter, this may change once he feels comfortable in his new home.

A home with secure solid fencing is essential, as Cricket has demonstrated he can easily climb chain-link fencing. He would be best suited to a home with older children and all family members must meet him prior to adoption.

If living with another dog, a meet and greet is required. Cricket is very social and eager to interact with other dogs but can be overexcited and a little rough at times. A calm, tolerant adult dog would be the best match to help guide him as he develops his social skills. Careful management and ongoing training will be important, particularly while he is settling in, as he has shown some frustration reactivity towards other dogs from a distance in the shelter environment. 🐾

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
