Howie's Story

Meet Howie!

Howie didn't have the best start to life which means he's still working out how to adjust to the world as a normal doggie. Howie has opened up a lot during his time in care, and he's shown us just how sweet and loving he is.

New adopters will need to understand that Howie may take some time to open up in a new home environment, we recommend starting his new life small. E.g. setting up a crate and play pen area for him to free roam/ retreat at his own pace. Allowing free access in the home may be too overwhelming to begin with so it's recommended to gradually allow access to the rest of the house. Howie does get worried by loud noises or sudden movements and has shown some pacing when stressed, new owners will need to take things slowly until Howie is able to settle into the home. Howie has shown some avoidance with close handling and touch, new owners will need to work on slow touch consent and go at his pace, he loves chicken and meaty treats so that may be the way to win him over!

Howie is still learning how to walk on lead, new owners will need to start slow and practice on lead walks around the house and the backyard first before beginning to venture out into the neighbourhood. Howie may panic with pressure on the lead. All interactions will need to remain positive and force free.

Would best suit a quiet, adult only home. Ideally keep guest visitation to a minimum while they settle in and adjust to their new environment.

Must meet dogs at time of adoption. May do well with a calm, gentle and tolerant small breed friend to help him gain confidence.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
