Harold's Story

Hi, I’m Harold. Let me tell you a little about myself.

I’m a gentle and sensitive boy who is still learning that the world can be a safe place. When I first arrived, I was very worried and unsure about everything around me. With time, patience, and kindness, I’ve started to feel more comfortable and build trust with the people I know.

Once I feel safe, my personality begins to shine. I’m affectionate and can be a bit cheeky, and I enjoy having fun. Sometimes I can get a little overexcited, so I will need ongoing help with my manners, especially remembering to keep all four paws on the ground.

I’m looking for a calm home that can give me structure and routine. I would really love to be allowed indoors so I can be part of the family. Having my own safe space, like a crate, would help me when I feel overwhelmed. I would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time to help me settle and gradually build my confidence with being left alone.

Walking on lead is still something I am learning, although i am doing super well in shelter with this! The outside world can feel overwhelming, and I can become scared and panic. I will need a patient person who can help me practice in quiet, familiar places and go at a pace I am comfortable with.

I am a smart boy and very motivated by food. I already know how to sit and I am working on other skills. I enjoy enrichment activities that keep my mind busy and help me feel settled.

Other dogs can make me a bit nervous, especially if they are loud or too forward. I would do best with a calm and tolerant dog friend who is happy to take introductions slowly. I will need to meet any other dogs before going home.

Older children may be suitable for me, as long as they are calm, understanding, and willing to be involved in my training.

What I need most is someone patient and committed who can help me continue to grow in confidence. In return, I will be a loyal and loving companion once I feel safe and settled.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
