The footage aired on 730 Report Thursday 17th October is not only confronting but highly disturbing. The treatment of the horses prior to slaughter was, quite frankly, appalling. RSPCA Qld has been advised by the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) that they have commenced an investigation into this matter.

The RSPCA believes that the racing industry needs to do more to adopt responsible breeding practices including reducing the number of racehorses bred, minimising the risk of injury, and for every horse to be provided with a suitable alternative role on retirement with provisions being made to ensure their long-term welfare.

Reporting on horses bred for racing and their life outcome is also unclear from multiple reports.

There are multiple animal welfare issues that need to be improved and addressed within the horse racing industry.
