Oreo's Story

Oreo is a sweet, affectionate girl who is searching for a calm, loving home where she can feel safe, secure and truly part of the family. She loves being close to her people and feels most comfortable when she is indoors with them, included in daily life and given the reassurance she needs to settle in. Oreo can be a sensitive and anxious girl at times, and she is best suited to a quiet home environment with patient people who understand that building confidence can take time. She can feel overwhelmed in busy or unfamiliar settings and has shown that courtyard or unit-style living does not suit her, so she is looking for a home with a yard and some grass where she can feel more relaxed. Oreo also needs very gentle, gradual introductions to new places and outdoor environments so she can learn to feel safe at her own pace. She would love a home where someone is around for much of the day, such as a retired household or someone who works from home, as she bonds closely with her people and can become distressed when left alone. Oreo feels safest when she has access to the indoors and can become overwhelmed if shut outside, so she is looking for a home where she can enjoy being both indoors and out as part of the family. While she is not overly interested in toys just yet, Oreo may become more playful as she continues to settle and grow in confidence. In foster care, it took her a little time to truly relax and discover that toys could be fun, so her new family may enjoy watching that side of her blossom over time. Oreo may suit a home with a calm, respectful dog pending a thorough meet and greet, but she is not suited to dog parks or off-lead areas. She would be best suited to a home with respectful teens, pending a meet at adoption. Oreo is also not suited to a home with cats or small animals, as she has shown some prey drive toward wildlife and will need sensible ongoing management in these situations. For the right family, Oreo will be a wonderfully loving companion - a gentle soul who will flourish with kindness, patience and the comfort of feeling safe and included.

What should I feed my dog?

Your dog's diet should be based on a high-quality, balanced premium commercial dog food that is suited to their specific life stage (puppy, adolescent, adult, pregnant, senior) and health condition.

The amount of food your dog needs will depend on factors like their size, breed, age, and activity level. However, it’s important not to overfeed or underfeed. Your vet can weigh your dog, assess their body condition score, and offer feeding recommendations.

To prevent bloat, which can be life-threatening, adult dogs should be fed at least twice a day and should not engage in exercise right before or after meals. This is especially important for deep-chested breeds like Boxers and German Shepherds.

Make sure fresh drinking water is always available. Do not give your dog milk as it can lead to gastrointestinal issues.

Should I feed bones to my dog?

Bones offer dogs nutrients and mental stimulation while helping remove tartar from their teeth. However, bones can also break teeth, cause blockages, and carry harmful bacteria. Consider these factors to make an informed decision for your pet and family’s wellbeing.

Dental chews are a good alternative if you wish to provide your pet with entertainment that assists with teeth cleaning. Visit RSPCA World for Pets for a range of quality dental chews for your dog.
