What to expect

This is an extremely rewarding Volunteer role and would suit applicants with a sound understanding of positive reinforcement based training techniques, who love animals, are able to work with a small group of fellow volunteers, dedicated to Animal Welfare issues and most importantly wanting to be part of our extensive re-homing program.

This position requires volunteers to interact with our shelter dogs and puppies teaching them basic manners and skills. This is an extremely important part of helping to reduce the stress of the animals waiting to find their forever homes.  Recording and reporting observations of dogs and puppies, and assisting new volunteers during their first couple of shifts is required.  Cleaning is part of this role to ensure the enclosures are clean and ready for the animals to sleep and dream of their forever home!

What are the tasks?

Providing basic positive reinforcement based training in the afternoons/early evenings. Providing enrichment for the dogs and puppies in the adoption area. Being alert and making detailed observations of the animals behavior, taking particular note of changes and improvements. Supporting newer volunteers once you’re comfortable in the role. Ensuring interactions between the dogs are managed appropriately with everyone’s safety in mind.

When can I volunteer?

Vacancies are currently limited!! Available shifts are on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 4.45pm - 7pm. In this role we request a minimum commitment of 1 x 2 hour and 15 min shift per week for a minimum of 3 months. Participation in the orientation and training focussing on animal behaviour and positive reinforcement techniques will be required to attend.

Where can I volunteer? 

This role is based at our Wacol Animal Care Campus in Brisbane.

PLEASE NOTE: As part of volunteering with us you will be required to purchase an RSPCA Volunteer T-shirt for $30. It is also a requirement that before handling animals at the RSPCA you have an up to date Tetanus vaccination.
