"Working at the RSPCA is not a job, it's a lifestyle choice!"
A note from our Human Resource Manager …
We are blessed in the Human Resource department to receive hundreds of applications every week from enthusiastic and dedicated individuals who want to work at the RSPCA. Most start their letters with a plea of “I love animals…” and yes that is a prerequisite, but how do we determine out of the hundreds of enthusiastic and dedicated applicants, who is the best person for the job? There are qualifications, experience, education and a good attitude to consider. You must interview well and jump through all of the appropriate hoops re work history and reference checks.
But there is one thing that we look for above all else … A one-eyed, resolute, interminable commitment to the RSPCA values and the five freedoms of animal welfare that underpin those values. We are here for no other purpose than to serve the animals in our care. There is no room for individual agendas, prestigious career paths, big salary packages, spacious offices or thoughts of how working at the RSPCA would look good on their resume. We seek only those who are prepared to make this commitment to us, to the animals in our care and to the donors that support us.
If you’re considering a career at the RSPCA and you share our passion for animal welfare then there are some harsh realities of working in this field that you may need to consider: long hours, limited resources, working in the rain, heat and cold, working public holidays including Xmas day, New Years Day, Easter etc. Not to mention the emotional rollercoaster ride that just comes with the territory of working in an animal shelter. We can save most but not all. The joy of those we save is momentary the pain of those we lose stays with us for ever.
As Human Resource Manager for RSPCA Queensland, I am constantly amazed and in awe of the truly incredible group of people I work with everyday. Across the management team and through the ranks in every department I applaud everyone who comes together everyday to do what we do. I am incredibly proud to be a part of this amazing organisation.
