School & Community Visits

RSPCA Qld’s Humane Education Service to you

The RSPCA Humane Education Department delivers education programs to schools and the community. Our programs foster humane values towards animals, people and the environment. All our lessons can be adapted to suit the requirements of your students and cover such topics as Responsible Pet Ownership, The role of the RSPCA in preventing animal cruelty and Careers in Animal Welfare.

What is Humane Education?

Humane Education teaches humane values. These values foster care for animals, people and the environment.

Humane Education Encourages: Citizenship, Kindness, Fairness, Responsibility, Commitment, Courage and Respect.

School visits

Preschool to Year 12, curriculum linked free programs. RSPCA Education Officers will visit your school.

Shelter Tours

Visiting a shelter is a wonderful opportunity to see the RSPCA Qld in action, and to view animals waiting for a loving home.  Individuals and families are able to come to our shelters to view our adoption animals during opening hours.   Some RSPCA Qld Shelters offer tours for school groups and members of the community.  For information about regional shelter tours, please contact your local shelter.

Refer to http://www.rspcaqld.org.au/aboutus/shelters.htm for details on local shelters and opening times.

Please remember that there are Workplace Health and Safety Concerns when you visit a shelter.  Some shelters are unable to offer shelter tours on particular days, or during the summer, due to Workplace Health and Safety concerns.  Tours may not include the Veterinary Services sections of the shelter in order to prevent the spread of infections.  Our first priority is to keep our animals, ourselves and our community safe!

Education Tours of Fairfield Shelter (State Headquarters)

The Humane Education Department offers education tours of the Fairfield Shelter to schools and community groups on Mondays during the school term (March to October).   For the safety of the general public, our staff, volunteers and our animals, the minimum age for students visiting the shelter tour is Grade 1.   Visitors will need a hat, water bottle and sturdy footwear.

The shelter is closed for adoptions on a Monday and it is possible to move school groups around the site safely, and for shelter staff to provide information to the students.   Education Tours do not operate during the summer (from November to February) due to the excessive heat and Workplace Health and Safety Issues.

Education Tours of the Fairfield Shelter cost $4.00 per student and focus on the work of the RSPCA Qld, careers at the RSPCA and the consequences of failing to care for animals appropriately.  Like all our lessons, our shelter tours are aimed at helping each visitor develop a deeper empathy with animals.   Each class group is provided with follow up resources and information about the RSPCA Queensland.

Group size for Education Tours should be 15 or less, in order that students and visitors can hear their tour leader and also to move around the shelter safely.   With enough notice, class groups may be broken up into two groups with two educators in place.

Community members should remember that they can view the adoption areas of the shelter during opening hours.

If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact the Humane Education Department on 07 3710 9804 or 0419 653 694.
