Breaking the cycle of abuse
RSPCA Qld has launched a groundbreaking campaign, “Tested on Animals”, to raise public awareness of the link between child abuse, domestic violence and cruelty to animals, and that cruelty to animals may be a precursor to other forms of violence.
We are also actively helping to break the cycle of abuse. No one should have to feel that they can’t leave a violent home, which is why RSPCA Qld and dvconnect domestic and family violence service of Queensland have joined forces to provide an innovative service: “Pets in Crisis – Domestic Violence Program”.
Through “Pets in Crisis”, RSPCA Qld’s trained foster carers will provide temporary care of companion animals of women who need to stay in domestic violence refuges, but who are unable to find alternative care for their pets.
RSPCA Qld is proud to help break the cycle of abuse by:
· Enabling women and their children to seek refuge and leave a violent situation, secure in the knowledge that their pet will be safe
· Reducing ongoing animal cruelty as part of the spectrum of domestic violence
RSPCA Qld has also formed a “links” group, bringing together key stakeholders, including the Queensland Police Service and the Department of Child Safety, to develop cross-reporting systems, cross-training and early intervention programs that will help to better detect violence in the home, profile perpetrators and help to break the cycle of abuse, particularly in young offenders.
