Humane alternatives
RSPCA Qld does not oppose the farming of animals and the consumption of their food products. But we are dedicated to replacing intensive farming systems with systems that allow farm animals to carry out their natural behaviour and live in more natural family groups, to have full health and wellbeing, and to be protected from pain and suffering.
Free range and organic systems ensure that farm animals are allowed adequate space and appropriate access to the outdoors. In particular, RSPCA Qld promotes:
· Barn laid and free range egg production methods over battery or caged-hen egg production
· The replacement of individual metal crates for breeding sows with the group housing of several pigs in a straw yard
When animals are to be slaughtered, it should be done quickly and humanely, and the transport of live animals for slaughter should be minimised.
