Humane alternatives
There are humane alternatives to the battery cage system in the form of barn laid and free-range housing systems, which allow hens to behave naturally.
Under RSPCA standards and guidelines for accredited egg producers, barn laying and free range hens are free to roam, stretch and flap, have litter in which to dust-bathe, nests in which to lay their eggs, and constant access to food and water. Free range hens also have access to fresh air and sunshine, offering hens a more natural environment.
Any farmer can apply for RSPCA accreditation, and eggs from an accredited farm are sold with the RSPCA logo.
